Guide to the use of this Database

One of the key uncertainties in developing distributed generation (DG) is the requirement for a variety of permits and approvals. These requirements cover a wide variety of topics and vary widely by state as well as by technology, fuel and size of the project. In addition, some of these regulations and requirements are being updated or expanded to directly address DG projects.

Many DG developers are not familiar with these permitting issues and find that researching and responding to a wide range of differing permitting requirements is a major hurdle in project development. The goal of this database is to offer an online data resource that provides basic permitting information for DG projects on a continuously updated basis to cover as many of the permitting issues as possible.

This database is organized by state. Click on an individual state on the map or choose a state from the drop-down box. Each state page provides information for emissions regulations, siting regulations and regulatory codes. Additionally, information is presented on "exit fees", standby rates and economic incentives if information is available. The database provides an extensive assortment of links to other sites for further information.

The information for this database was obtained through a combination of interviews with state permitting officials and review of state permitting regulations. This database is a work in progress. Please check back frequently for updates. This work is being done for the U.S. Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While the information is believed to be accurate, always verify information with appropriate regulatory agencies. Please direct all comments or questions to Jessica Rackley 703.528.1900
