Interconnection Requirements for Distributed Generation

Many on-site generators need to connect to the electric grid either for back and standby power or as a means of selling excess electricity to the grid. The interconnection process is complex from the technical, regulatory, administrative and business perspectives and has been the subject of much discussion and debate.

DOE “Making Connections” Report

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engines (IEEE) is developing standardized technical interconnection protocols. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has been developing administrative procedures for generator interconnection. Several states have also developed interconnection protocols and procedures. There are several websites that track these broader interconnection activities .

Despite the progress being made on these more generalized interconnection protocols, most DG developers today must negotiate interconnection agreements directly with local utilities or regional transmission organizations (RTOs). This website focuses on the existing procedures and required actions for DG developers who wish to interconnect today. This includes new state regulations and information about interconnection procedures for individual utilities or RTOs.
